Because beat isn’t everything when it comes to your wedding…

Your first dance track is always a tricky one to pin down. You want something meaningful, but not too slushy. Romantic, with a bit of bite. Unique, without being gimmicky. And something that defines you as a couple that will stand the test of time.

Of course, the best way to choose what you’re going to dance to is to pick a song that already means something to you both, but if your choices aren’t wedding appropriate, or if music isn’t your passion, have a listen to some classic love songs and see which lyrics resonate with you the most. Or, if all else fails, choose from this list of unique first dance tracks we’ve handpicked for you, and if anyone asks, pretend you heard it the night you met.

From the wild and wacky to the romantic and traditional, we have something for everyone.

Maestro, take it away.

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros – That’s What’s Up

Are you the bread to their butter? Are they the jam to your scone? Celebrate your union with this folky, upbeat number from our favourite stateside hippies.

Sam Cooke – Nothing Can Change This Love

As dad always says, they just don’t make them like they used to, do they? Although we’re of the humble opinion that any one of Sam Cooke’s crackled, vintage repertoire will make for wedding first dance perfection, why not opt for something a little outside the box? A tinkly piano and sickly sweet metaphor or two are all you old romantics really need, and boy, does this one deliver.

Joe Cocker – You Are So Beautiful

Another romantic classic, but with a little more raspy vigour than the rest. We don’t think we need to explain why this would be perfect for a first dance track, just have a listen and fall in love with it yourself.

Kodaline – The One

With an intro that whispers ‘for better or for worse’, could this track be anymore perfect for a wedding first dance? Oh so modern, yet oh so wedding appropriate.

Baby I’m Yours – Arctic Monkeys

With a vintage sound so authentic, your guests might be fooled into thinking this is a nostalgic number from the 1950s, it’s actually none other than Alex Turner and his Arctic Monkeys. A modern love song without a hint of irony is hard to find, but we think we’ve nailed it.

Hall & Oates ~ You Make My Dreams Come True

Made famous by 100 Days of Summer, this track by Hall & Oates oozes that upbeat, chest pumping sort of love you only see in the movies. If you’re lucky enough to have it in real life, however, why not flaunt it?

Raphael Saadiq Ft. Joss Stone – Just One Kiss

If you are the sort of couple who can’t keep their hands off each other, this sultry track is perfect for you. The fact it is a duet also gives it that one-to-another intimacy that other tracks don’t; perfect for a first dance.

Walk the Moon – Shut Up and Dance With Me

A bit of a fist pumper, this track pairs sweet lyrics with a plucky, moreish melody. Definitely one to get guests up and dancing, this alternative wedding first dance song is definitely the least slushy on our list.

Crystal Fighters – You & I

A toe tapping, very cool love song for laidback lovers.

The Beatles – In My Life

It comes as no surprise that the kings of rock and roll have made it onto our list of perfect wedding songs. A light melody paired with simple love lyrics, this track is a timeless one.

Daft Punk – Digital Love

If you swiped right instead of meeting in a bar, celebrate new age romance with some retro digital love from Daft Punk.

Tina Turner – The Best

A bold choice but a banger nonetheless. Get straight to the point and step into married life with some vintage Tina. After all, everybody loves a power ballad.

Imagine Dragons – On Top of The World

An uplifting track for couples who want to tell the world how they’re feeling without being too cringey.

Zombies – This Will Be Our Year

“You don’t have to worry  – all your worried days are gone.” That all consuming love. What more could you want for your first dance.

The Pogues – Love You ’til The End

As mushy as anything, this love song oozes that irresistible Irish charm. If you’re after lots of tears, this is a definite frontrunner.
